Beautifully fulfilling my predictions made eleven years ago, it is a broad, full-bodied, savory red displaying notes of fruitcake, unsmoked cigar tobacco, truffles, incense, black cherries and black currants. Fleshy and close to full maturity, but in no danger of falling apart, this beauty should drink well for another decade or longer. Medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin and a long, rich finish, this impressively endowed wine should hit its peak in 4-5 years and last for two decades or more. Good complexity, pleasant red berry fruit, well-integrated tannins, fresh structure, fine heart cherry, already approachable, mineral, delicate nougat aftertaste, a versatile food companion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e2012\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWine Advocate 91+:\u003c\/strong\u003e Very elegant kirsch liqueur-like notes mixed with licorice, spice and earth jump from the glass of this famous St.-Emilion, long-owned by the Malet Roquefort family. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc (14% alcohol), this has slightly more acidity and structure than some St.-Emilions. The limestone-dominated terroir comes through in the wine’s striking and very powerful minerality. It is medium-bodied, elegant, tightly knit and probably in need of 2-4 years of bottle age. It should drink well for the following 15 years. Medium to full-bodied with firm and very finely grained tannins with layers of softly spoken fruit and great freshness, it finishes long.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJames Suckling 94:\u003c\/strong\u003e Impressive deep-set dark cherries, blueberries and dark plums here with neatly fitted spicy oak, which adds immediate complexity. Deep, long and fresh with vibrant acidity, underpinning ripe blackberries, plums and hints of chocolate. Superb wine. Try from 2022.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVinous 97: \u003c\/strong\u003eThe 2015 La Gaffeliére is a wine of total finesse. Much less obvious and overt than most Saint-Émilions in this vintage, La Gaffeliére makes its case on harmony and grace\u003cbr\u003eabove all else. Bright, lifted Cabernet Franc-infused aromatics give the 2015 striking freshness and aromatic presence. The flavors are bright and nuanced to the core, with\u003cbr\u003eplenty of red cherry, espresso and floral notes. But back to the basics. In 2015 La Gaffeliére is a wine that stands out because of its impeccable balance and sense of\u003cbr\u003eproportion. I loved it. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal fragrant scents of kirsch, black raspberries and warm plums plus suggestions of unsmoked cigars, rosehip tea and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic elegance and sophistication, with tons of bright, perfumed fruit and exquisitely ripe tannins, finishing with bags of freshness and energy. Since the lower-lying sections of La Gaffeliere were affected by frost this year, this wine mainly comes from the section up on the Saint-Émilion plateau, near Ausone. Truly impressive!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJames Suckling 93:\u003c\/strong\u003e There are some sappy and leafy elements to the nose with a thread of red berries and fresh blueberries. The palate has plush, lithe and juicy appeal with smoothly rendered tannins and juicy, crunchy acidity. Drink or hold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDecanter 93:\u003c\/strong\u003e Richly layered, clearly one of the best in this flight, with mouth-watering minerality (for me, that quality always come across as texture not taste). This is an excellent wine, intense in the way that not many are in 2017. Austere but ready to grow, it has bedded down and improved over ageing. An unusual blend because of the frost, but one that they are going to stick to over the long term.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e2019\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWine Advocate 95:\u003c\/strong\u003e The 2019 La Gaffelière wafts from the glass with a rich bouquet of blackberries and cherries mingled with subtle hints of burning embers and loamy soil that's framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it's a concentrated, vibrant wine built around bright acids and fine, powdery tannins. Its vivid fruit tones and classical balance make this Cabernet Franc-rich blend a promising candidate for sustained bottle age. Anyone who has tasted the great wines this estate produced in the 1950s and 1960s knows how great this site can be; and with stricter selection as well as the elimination of fruit from vines growing on the plain from the blend, that potential appears to be being unleashed at last.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJames Suckling 96:\u003c\/strong\u003e A vibrant, fragrant red with aromas of blackberries, currants, walnuts and mint chocolate. Bright and tightly wound, La Gaffeliére sizzles with energy. Dark red fruit, mocha, blood orange, mint and dried flowers lend striking aromatic presence. There is some youthful austerity here, but nothing time in bottle won't take care of. The 2019 doesn't quite match the\u003cbr\u003estratospheric grandeur of the magical 2018, but it comes close.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e2021\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWine Advocate 93:\u003c\/strong\u003e The 2021 La Gaffelière is quite rich and generous by the standards of the vintage, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with licorice, pencil shavings and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it has good depth at the core, lively acids and a sapid finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJames Suckling 94:\u003c\/strong\u003e Lovely reduction at first that gives an ashy feel to the red berries, crushed stones, subtle cream, hibiscus and some dark-colored fruit. The medium- to full-bodied palate unleashes plenty of fine-grained tannins. Fresh, bright and more vertically structured than many of its peers from this vintage, but it remains polished and textured. Lingering finish. Drink from 2024.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVinous 96:\u003c\/strong\u003e The 2021 La Gaffelière is a wine of sublime elegance and understated finesse. Aromatic and pliant, the 2021 shows the more delicate side of the year, yet all the Gaffelière signatures are present. Lavender, mocha, spice, dried herbs and leather are some of the many notes that grace this exquisite Saint-Émilion. The balance here is mind-blowing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDecanter 94:\u003c\/strong\u003e Fragrant and ripe fruit on the nose, perfumed black cherries and a dusting of milk chocolate. Lots of toasted aromatics too, wood, clove, cinnamon and spice. Weighty and well textured, this has a lovely presence on the palate, pure but with concentration yet cool at the same time. Stylish with energy and focus. Really sustains the palate, lots of movement and forward motion. One of the more complete wines in terms of energy and just harmony. Medium-bodied, pure, and layered, it has solid, ripe tannins and a well-balanced, elegant profile.
