Sure, La Fleur-Pétrus does not have the mystique associated from a small single vineyard - as many Pomerols do - and yet there is no denying the elegance and class here. Bright red fleshed fruit, blood orange and exotic spice race across the palate, framed by silky, plush tannins that wrap it all together. La Fleur-Pétrus is fabulous. That's all there is to it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDecanter 97:\u003c\/strong\u003e Gorgeous aromatics with some savoury elements; truffle, tobacco, mocha and ripe black bramble fruits. Excellent precision and tension in the mouth, this is refined but layered with chocolate, coffee, liquorice, stone, some bitter orange notes alongside blackcurrant and black cherry. Incredible texture, mouth coating for sure but so sophisticated, it's layered yet so well defined, pulsing with energy on the palate in waves of fruit then cooling mint then spice then more fruit which lingers in the mouth. Elegant but also so complex, you can sit with this for a while savouring each element. Suave on the palate, with exquisite length, La Fleur-Pétrus is a wine of total sensuality. In 2020, ripeness is pushed to the edge, while the new oak is a bit present. Bright acids and sweet floral notes linger on the long, beautifully delineated finish. This is a bit more extroverted than I remember en primeur, but superb just the same.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDecanter 97:\u003c\/strong\u003e Sumptuous and stylish, this, like many of the best in 2020, is quietly confident showing just enough structure and seriousness while still being joyous and sensual. Blueberries, pomegranates and raspberries comprise the clear and crystalline fruit with cooling minty freshness alongside touches of dark chocolate and licks of medicinal and exotic spices. Tannins are supple and just chewy, giving the perfect weight to the palate with a wet stone aspect to the long finish. It gives the structure that will allow it to age. Full-bodied, rich and chocolaty, it's ripe and heady, with an ample core of fruit and a sweet, lingering finish. Try after 2030.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVinous 95:\u003c\/strong\u003e The 2022 La Fleur-Pétrus has an opulent, ripe bouquet of blackberry, liquorice and brown spices, with a little heady alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and rounded tannins, quite plush, and there is a veneer of dark chocolate towards the finish. Quite modern in style, but it pulls it off with flair. A glorious celebration of silky smooth tannins, red berry fruit, crystalline minerality and soft spices. The tannins feel almost weightless, with the focus on the intense fruit flavours and searing freshness. A shot of sweet red cherry and mouthwatering acidity gives a sense of fun before turning to black chocolate, tobacco, slate, aniseed and cinnamon towards the finish. This distinctly Pinot-leaning Syrah delivers the goods. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e2018\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWine Advocate 95+:\u003c\/strong\u003e The 2018 Syrah Californio, aged 15-16 months in 20% new French oak, is fragrant and seamless. Blackcurrants, plums and blueberries are accented by touches of violet, coffee bean, potting soil and cast iron on the nose. The medium-bodied palate is granular and lifted, with ringing violet perfume and a very long, layered finish. It's stunning straight from bottle (and highly drinkable at just 13.9% alcohol), but it offers the concentration and freshness to develop savory complexity in the cellar over the next decade or more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJames Suckling 96:\u003c\/strong\u003e It really smells like Cote-Rotie with purple fruit, grilled meat, tar, ink and oyster shell. Blood orange too. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and asphalt. Wonderful length and polish. Long and very precise. Give it time to open and show itself on the palate. Ripe red cherry, plum, chocolate, leather and licorice open first, followed by more typical Syrah notes of black pepper, game, tobacco, incense and leather that add a striking upper register. The 2018 was done entirely with destemmed fruit, yet it has plenty of savory energy. I must admit, I am generally not the biggest fan of Syrahs from Hyde, but the 2018 is a flat-out stunner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e2019\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJames Suckling 96:\u003c\/strong\u003e Loads of lead pencil, graphite, blueberries, blackberries, and flowers on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied and very fine tannins, with texture and length that caresses your palate. Shows the sophistication of syrah in Carneros. So delicious now but will improve with age.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVinous 96:\u003c\/strong\u003e The 2019 Syrah California Hyde Vineyard is gorgeous, but it is also an infant. The purity of the flavors is remarkable. Bright dark fruit, flowers, spice, mint and leather are all finely knit in a Syrah that impresses with its delineation and total class. The 2019 is such a sensual wine that it will be tempting early, but I have seen these Syrah blossom with time. I expect that will be the case here as well. A touch of salinity serves for saliva-inducement in the long-lasting and only moderately sweet finish.
