CNY Wine + Food Pairing - Nian Gao Match
The sticky cake known as 'nian gao' has a special place in Chinese New Year celebrations because their sweetness symbolizes abundance and all things sweet and good for the coming year. Additionally, their round shape signifies family togetherness, so eating this dessert during the CNY celebration is a must. In traditional households, this cake is steamed and eaten as it is, however, today, we can get a variation and this includes the popular style of frying the slices with some beaten eggs. A powerful and aromatic Viognier like the La Doriane with intense floral aromas and rich, full-bodied flavours and modest acidity will be ideal as this is not a unduly sweet cake.
