A Piedmont Legacy for the Cellars

A Piedmont Legacy for the Cellars

Built in the 1700s atop Roman foundations from 50 B.C.—the cellars of Pio Cesare preserve a natural balance of temperature and humidity across four levels, including one beneath the Tanaro River. This ancient stability, carefully maintained through centuries of renovations, ensures ideal aging conditions for Barolo and Barbaresco, aligning with their rigorous DOCG standards."

Multi-Vineyard Strategy
Founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, Federica Boffa and her cousin Cesare Benvenuto now represent the fifth generation at Pio Cesare’s helm. Continuing the family’s 144-year legacy, Federica is shaping the winery’s future through sustainability efforts such as organic farming, climate adaptation, and minimal intervention. Such methods include:

Priotising Soil Health: Organic farming enhances soil fertility and resilience, fostering healthier vines and terroir-driven wines.
Chemical-Free Vineyards: Eliminating use of synthenic pesticides and herbicides, adhering to organic viticulture standards while rejecting certifications they deem more aligned with marketing gimmick than genuine philosophical commitment.

“The most important thing is continuing to be [true to our heritage] while adapting to modern challenges.” Addressing climate change and sustainability is the key to ensure Pio Cesare’s legacy endures for generations to come.
