Female Winemakers Part 2 Bordeaux - Les Légende R, L’Évangile

This week, our feature on female winemakers highlights two remarkable women from Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), a historic and prestigious wine group that is best known for Château Lafite - a Premier Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux estate acquired in 1868. The group owns several renowned wineries, including Les Légende R and Château L’Évangile. In this feature, we’ll be sharing more about these outstanding women and the exceptional estates they represent.

Les Légendes R
Since 1868, the family behind Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) has dedicated more than six generations to studying the unique landscape and character of their terroir. Recognizing Bordeaux as a region of remarkable diversity and charm, they are committed to ensuring that wine lovers from around the world can experience and appreciate the beauty of Bordeaux.

Diane Flamand
Diane grew up tasting Médoc wines with her parents and grandparents, developing a passion for wine early on. She went on to study Oenology at the School of Bordeaux, completing winemaking internships at renowned estates including Château Lafite Rothschild, Lynch-Bages, and Pichon Longueville Baron in Pauillac. In 1991, Diane earned a Master’s in International Wine & Spirits Trade from ESC Dijon. She rejoined DBR Lafite as the winemaker for Légende in 2004 and has been leading the label ever since.

L'Évangile
The origins of Château L’Évangile trace back to the Léglise family. In 1862, Paul Chaperon, an heir of the Ducasse family, acquired the property. He established the reputation of the estate and had the Second Empire style residence of L’Évangile built. From the second edition of Cocks Féret, in 1868, L’Évangile was listed and considered as a “Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol”. The property remained in the hands of Chaperon’s descendants until 1990, when they selected Baron Eric de Rothschild as their successor. In 2020, the Domaine Barons de Lafite Rothschild appointed Juliette Couderc to manage the estate.

Juliette Couderc
Juliette was an intern at a fertilisation consultancy where she met Oliver Tregoat, the technical director of DBR Lafite, who ended up becoming her manager and mentor years later. In 2017, Juliette was offered a managerial role at the Long Dai estate in China, a position she held until 2020. She then assumed leadership at Château L’Évangile in September 2020, and now dedicates her time to guiding and mentoring the next generation of young professionals.
