Female Winemakers Part 3 Nahe - Schlossgut Diel

In July 2019, Caroline Diel became the seventh winemaker at Schlossgut Diel and notably the first woman to hold the position, while working in partnership with her husband, Sylvain Taurisson-Diel. Their complementary skills bring balance and strength to the estate: Sylvain oversees sales and marketing, while Caroline is in charge of the entire winemaking process, guiding each vintage “from bud to bottle.” This teamwork has been instrumental in maintaining and enhancing Schlossgut Diel’s reputation.

Caroline’s passion for winemaking has driven her to gain extensive hands-on experience. She completed internships at the prestigious Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux and at renowned German wine estates including Robert Weil, Toni Jost, Hans Rebholz, and Dr. Deinhard.

In 2006, after years of adventures and insights, she returned to Burg Layen to work alongside long-time cellarmaster Christoph Friedrich, contributing to both the viticultural and vinicultural work of the estate. Since then, the university-trained oenologist sets out each year anew to draw the very best from the Schlossgut's vines and terroir, relying on both artisan intuition and a lifetime of experience.

Today, Schlossgut Diel is a life filled with not only wine but family.
