We are here for you with ideas for Father's Day. To pay homage to your dad, we look to another dad, the late Aldo Conterno himself, the "Lion of Barolo".
Aldo was the 4th generation of a Barolo making estate before striking out on his own in 1969. Family, he always said, was at the heart of all their activities. He was driven by a vision to preserve the beauty of Barolo while making a style that was somewhere between the staunch traditionalists and the modernistas... "What we want to offer is simply the interpretations of a terroir through our deep-rooted belief."
The Poderi Aldo Conterno winery is situated in Bussia of Monforte d'Alba, which is the heart of the Barolo wine area. The 25-hectare estate vinifies its own wine exclusively. The yields per hectare are very low and total production is about 80,000 bottles a year. A single vineyard known as the “Gran Bussia”, which is widely acknowledged as one of the finest interpretation of Barolo, is only released in the best vintages. It derives from the best Bussia vineyards in Monforte d'Alba, the Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello vineyards. Today, his three sons Franco, Stefano and Giacomo continue his legacy.

THE WHITE KINDA DAD
If dad loves whites with texture and power, the Bussiador Blanc is made from Chardonnay for good structure and body, which can be drunk early or aged.
A BALANCED KINDA DAD
For the straightfoward dad, the Barolo Bussia is an ideal Nebbiolo blend made from vines that are 15-20 years old. A selection of Bussia vineyards bring a good balance of rich fruit, great colour and softer tannins, ideal for an everyday indulgence.
THE FUN DAD
With more magnesium and manganese in the soil, there seems to be more aromas on the nose, alongside a cherry and strawberry palate that is immediately attractive.
THE STRICT DAD
From the vineyard named after the cricket, these grapes are more tannic and powerful due to richer content of iron in the soils. Be patient as this will need more time to age.
THE POWER-SUIT DAD
If your father is more on the assertive side, he may enjoy the forceful, heady and robust expressions from this much-lauded cru from Conterno. Its sharp focus and spicy finish of sandalwood and leather speaks to an impressive clientele.
THE ULTIMATE WINE LOVER
They say you should save the best for last. In this case, the Granbussia Reserve is the top wine produced by Aldo Conterno, which he was justly proud of. Only the best fruit from all three crus are selected, usually in the ratio of 70% Romirasco, 15% Cicala and 15% Colonnello. It is only produced in the best years and is aged 9 years before commercial release. A truly outstanding Barolo from the "Lion of Barolo".
