Aldo was the 4th generation of a Barolo making estate before striking out on his own in 1969. Family, he always said, was at the heart of all their activities. He was driven by a vision to preserve the beauty of Barolo while making a style that was somewhere between the staunch traditionalists and the modernistas... "What we want to offer is simply the interpretations of a terroir through our deep-rooted belief."
The Poderi Aldo Conterno winery is situated in Bussia of Monforte d'Alba, which is the heart of the Barolo wine area. The 25-hectare estate vinifies its own wine exclusively. The yields per hectare are very low and total production is about 80,000 bottles a year. A single vineyard known as the “Gran Bussia”, which is widely acknowledged as one of the finest interpretation of Barolo, is only released in the best vintages. It derives from the best Bussia vineyards in Monforte d'Alba, the Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello vineyards. Today, his three sons Franco, Stefano and Giacomo continue his legacy.

They say you should save the best for last. In this case, the Granbussia Reserve is the top wine produced by Aldo Conterno, which he was justly proud of. Only the best fruit from all three crus are selected, usually in the ratio of 70% Romirasco, 15% Cicala and 15% Colonnello. It is only produced in the best years and is aged 9 years before commercial release. A truly outstanding Barolo from the "Lion of Barolo".
