Wines That Pair with Chinese Food

In a blink of an eye, we bid the year end festive goodbye and are now ready to welcome the festivity of the Lunar New Year – and how is it a festivity without wines? The Lunar New Year is the perfect occasion to bring out a wine that we have been saving to share with friends and family.

Here are five of our wine picks that are sure to pair delectably with your favourite CNY goodies or reunion dinner dishes!

Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Terrassen 2019 ($40 nett)

Red wine lovers may protest, but they cannot disagree that many Asian food finds a natural match in the white wines of Austria. There will not be a wine more versatile at the table! Pronounced peppery flavour and racy structure offer plenty of pleasant refreshment. This wine exhibits a very typical and consistent style of Grüner Veltliner from Wachau characterised by fresh fruit and a pronounced minerality. Go for their Smaragd Achleiten Gruner Veltliner or Riesling if you’re a serious wine lover. It’s one of the most extraordinary sites in the Wachau. This wine impresses with mineral character, finesse and outstanding ageing potential!

Aldo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Conca Tre Pile 2017 ($63 nett | U.P. $70)

Aside from excellent Barolo from the ‘cru’ sites, Aldo also produces ‘underappreciated’ wines like Barbera. 2017 is a warm vintage, an advantage for the Barbera grape which accentuates its volume, richness and generosity. The bouquet offers black fruit, dried plum, spice, truffle-infused earth and toasted hazelnut. The winemaking has reduced the level of tannins and expressed the best of the excellent terroir. It will be a good start to pair with a hot appetiser like pan-fried dumplings!

Chateau de Pez 2018 ($68 nett | U.P. $80)

Need a wine for CNY hotpot dishes? Yes, you’ve found it! One of the oldest winemaking estates at St Estephe since 1452 received significant investments made at both vineyard & wine making facilities when Roederer Champagne house acquired the property in 1995. It’s a good value claret; displaying a medium bodied palate with black fruits showered with silky tannins.

Louis Roederer Brut Rose 2015 – Giftbox + 2 Flutes ($140 nett | U.P. $150)

Gift alert! You can never go wrong with this beautiful Champagne set with 2 flute glasses. The House of Louis Roederer is synonymous with legendary Champagne. The 2015 Brut Vintage Rosé is generous and demonstrative, bursting with aromas of peach, orange and pear mingled with hints of red berries, fresh bread and ginger. Full-bodied, layered and vinous, it’s perfect for a festive toast with more textural weight for those who prefer red wine.

Domaine Perrot-Minot Gevrey-Chambertin Justice des Seuvrees 2018 @ $185 nett

It can be hard to choose a suitable Burgundy to match with CNY meals. But here is one that does not disappoint. An elegant yet "honest" red with amazing depth and freshness, and with just 5681 bottles made, fruit for this Gevrey comes from 45 year-old vines. Silky on the palate with a juicy cherry flavour that is beautifully displayed against a dense mixture of tannins. Its finish is long and tangy with lingering earth tones. Perrot-Minot now farms organically and is currently seeking certification. Outstanding value.

Whether you’re dining delectable Chinese cuisine or munching on those addictive goodies, there is surely a wine to add that extra something to your food. Shop more fine wines that are on promotion this Lunar New Year on our e-store!
