Great Value Whites for Your Everyday Drinking
Share
In this perpetual summer of our sunny island, where the climate oscillates between warm and warmer, our palates have noticeably tilted towards white wine instead of red in recent years. The light, refreshing qualities of white wine make it an ideal choice for cooling off and unwinding in our humid tropical weather.
These wines not only promise a reprieve from the Singapore heat but are also extremely versatile when it comes to pairing with local cuisine, complementing dishes that are often rich with spices and flavours. We have put together a selection of great value white wines featuring various white varietals that are perfect for your everyday pairing.
Pinot Gris
Schlumberger Pinot Gris Les Princes Abbés
Known for it's rich flavours and slightly fuller body, Pinot Gris makes a beautiful pair with rish seafod dishes. Think seared scallops, or a creamy shrimp risotto. The full body of the Pinot Gris can stand up to the richness of these dishes, while its acidity will cut through the creaminess. The subtle sweetness of Pinot Gris also makes it a good match with moderately spicy and aromatic dishes, such as a hearty plate of briyani!
Aligote
Robert Sirugue Bourgogne Aligote
A lesser-known, yet intriguing white wine variety from Burgundy, Aligote is characterised by its vibrant acidity and fresh, crisp flavours. Its bright acidity cuts through the richness of seafood beautifully, making it an ideal pair with oysters, clams, and other shellfish, enhancing the fresh, briny flavours. The clean, sharp profile of Aligote also complements the delicate flavours of sushi and sashimi, particularly with lighter fish like tuna or halibut.
Riesling
Riesling is a versatile and dynamic white wine that varies from dry to very sweet, making it a suitable pairing for a wide array of dishes depending on its style and sweetness. A dry riesling, this Diel white is a perfect match for seafood and spicy dishes with its bright acidity and mineral notes. Try it with a piping hot bowl of seafood tomyum soup!
Chardonnay
St Innocent Freedom Hill Vineyard Chardonnay
One of the most popular white wines around the world, Chardonnay is also known for its ability to pair well with a wide range of dishes based on its style. The rich texture and buttery flavours of this oaked Chardonnay from Oregon pairs splendidly with rich seafood, meat and pasta dishes such as lobster with butter sauce or a creamy chicken casserole.
Grüner Veltliner
Wachau Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten
Grüner Veltliner, a versatile white wine from Austria, is renowned for its crisp acidity, peppery notes, and sometimes hints of green apple and citrus. The peppery and zesty nature of Grüner Veltliner makes it excellent for cutting through the richness of spicy dishes from cuisines like Thai or Vietnamese. Enjoy a refreshing pairing with Thai Som Tam (spicy papaya salad), or even with fresh salads and vegan dishes, especially those with a vinaigrette dressing or lemony profile.
