This July, we toast to French unity with French Champagne!

Question: Which is older, the Fete de la Federation or Maison Louis Roederer?

Answer: The Fete de la Federation, or celebration of the unity of the French nation, took place on 14 July 1790. Meanwhile, the House of Louis Roederer was founded in 1776!

One of the last great independent and family-run Champagne houses, Maison Louis Roederer was renamed after Louis Roederer inherited the estate in 1833. Taking great interest in enriching his vines, mastering each step of the production and acquiring more Grand Cru vineyards, Louis had an astute vision of the future and of the quality of his wines. Today, the house is in the capable hands of the 7th generation of this lineage, under Frédéric Rouzard, with 240 hectares located exclusively in the Grands and Premiers Crus of the Marne. Precise work is carried out in the practice of 'tailor-made' viticulture, which results in 410 parcels and plot-by-plot vinification.

In 2021, the house took the bold step to replace its Brut Premier NV with a numbered series called Collection. The debut wine, Collection 242, is composed of 56% of 2017, with the rest coming from a solera-style perpetual reserve (always 50-50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) as well as a toasty balance from large oak barrel reserves going back to 2009. This carefully blended Multi-Vintage is not just a response to climate change and sustainable viticulture, but also  an evolution in structure, form and style that redefines the great house style.

The MV Louis Roederer Collection 242 is available in 750ml and 1500ml while the new MV Louis Roederer Collection 243 is available in 375ml.

If you're planning to celebrate the French Bastille Day in great taste, you can't go wrong with one of these styles from Roederer, from the fullsome and lithe Collection 242, to the Carte Blanche Demi-Sec with its slighter sweeter palate, and the pristine Blanc de Blanc vintage.
