Collection: Super Tuscan - Italy’s Modern Wine Revolution
The birth of Super Tuscan wines was a response to the rigid Italian wine laws of the 1970s, which many winemakers found stifling. In pursuit of quality and innovation, these vintners started integrating 'forbidden' varietals such as Merlot into their blends. This rebellion against tradition eventually led to legislative change in 1992 with the establishment of the IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) classification, allowing for greater winemaking creativity. Sassicaia spearheaded this revolutionary movement. Sassicaia's triumph, alongside Tignanello, paved the way for the advent of more wines that embrace international varieties, such as Tenuta dell'Ornellaia and Masseto (which is purely Merlot), illustrating the dynamic and innovative spirit of Italian winemaking.
