Domaine Billaud Simon's prestigious parcel selection. The ambassador of the Domaine, it's a wine of gold and light par excellence. The nose discloses aromas of citrus and white flowers. The palate is rich, smooth and opulent with the perfect balance between a smooth texture, lively acidity, discreet minerality and fruit.
Beautiful white gold hue with delicate pale green glimmers. A seductive and very classic Chablis nose offering vine peach, banana, citrus fruits and brioche. The palate is well-balanced, rich, fresh and elegant. The smooth, rich structure lingers on the end palate. Ripe fruits combine harmoniously with mineral notes to give a soft mouthfeel.
Burghound 87-89: A fruit, bright and citrusy nose offers just enough typicity to be persuasive. There is good density and reasonably good energy to the round and delicious flavors that terminate in an agreeably dry lemon-tinged finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This should drink well young but a few years of keeping should help to add depth.
Burghound 89: A ripe mix of Granny Smith apple, lemon rind and tidal pool nuances is attractively fresh and bright. There is good volume and mid-palate concentration to the more attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess an enveloping mouthfeel, all wrapped in a nicely long if not especially dry finale. Fine quality for its level and worth a look.
Decanter 91: The bright, citrussy fruit of the Billaud-Simon Petit Chablis provides a charming and accessible entry point for the range. The texture is light and fresh, and the balance is thoroughly correct. The grapes are from 1.33ha on the plateau above Les Clos (lieu-dit Sur Les Clos, but can't be labelled as such). This vintage is 100% tank fermented and aged, although this is not always the case.
Burghound 88-91: A slightly riper if notably more layered nose offers up aromas of quinine, sea breeze, apple and plenty of citrus nuances. The medium weight flavors aren't quite as dense though they definitely finer with excellent punch that carries over to the detailed, balanced, clean and nicely dry finale. This is markedly more complex and the more complete wine.
Decanter 90: The charming village-level Chablis from Billaud-Simon initially has a somewhat restrained attack, yet with time, the entire array of Chablis aromas is here, from bright lemon zest to delicate white flowers and a struck flint mineral edge. There is noticeably more concentration and depth of flavour than in the Petit Chablis. The wine is balanced and pleasant; it is drinking well now and will easily hold for at least another five years.
