Château de Pez, west of the commune of Saint-Estèphe, rivals Calon Ségur as the most ancient of all the Bordeaux vineyards. Its 39 adjoining hectares enjoy ideal exposures on the hilltops around the Château itself. Thanks to continuous investment, Château de Pez has been carefully renovated since it was acquired by the House of Louis Roederer in 1995. Today this great Cru Bourgeois is restored to its former glory and retakes its rightful place in the limelight as one of the shining stars of Saint-Estèphe.
The precision accorded to every detail, right down to the meticulous selection of our 600 French oak barrels, has produced a typical Méoc wine which is fairly powerful, fruity, round, rich and smooth on the palate, making for a delicious wine with excellent ageing potential.
Wine Advocate 90: The 2021 de Pez offers up aromas of sweet blackberries, cherries, pencil shavings and white flowers, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's supple, suave and seamless. This attractively balanced, charming wine will drink well on release.
James Suckling 93: Mineral, iron, fine cassis and cocoa powder on the nose. This is very well-textured on the palate, showing elegance and refinement with a medium body and a linear, juicy finish.
Wine Advocate 92: Polished and charming, the 2022 de Pez bursts with aromas of blackberries, vanilla pod and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety palate that's integrated and expressive. This will offer a broad drinking window. As readers may remember, this estate has now been fully restructured and serves as something of a research and development laboratory for its sibling, Pichon Lalande, and director Nicolas Glumineau and his team have been working to bring more precision and purity to the wine.
James Suckling 94: Serious depth and complexity on the nose, showing a refreshing touch of spearmint to the pure blue fruit, cassis and minerals plus a hint of incense and graphite. Powerful but polished and taut in tannins with a linear set of fruit on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Structured, fine-boned and well-dissolved with a fresh, lengthy finish. 38% cabernet sauvignon, 59% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Great for aging.
Vinous 94: The 2022 de Pez is a stellar wine. Plum, blood orange, exotic spice, cedar and new leather fill out the layers. Technical Director Nicolas Glumineau has increased the focus at Pez through stricter selection in the field and greater attention in the winery—something made easier with the new cellar.
Wine Advocate 91-93: The 2023 de Pez confirms the progress taking place at this address. As readers may remember, this estate has now been fully restructured and serves as something of a research and development laboratory for its sibling, Pichon Lalande, and director Nicolas Glumineau and his team have been working to bring more precision and purity to the wine. Offering up aromas of cassis, violets and pencil shavings, framed by nicely integrated new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, polished and suave, with a layered core of sweet, vibrant fruit framed by ripe, powdery tannins.
James Suckling 93-94: A beautiful Pez with a solid core of fruit and creamy, refined tannins. It’s complex with plenty of blackcurrant, graphite, lead-pencil and nutmeg flavors. Linear and polished texture. Very precise and defined. Better than 2022.
