The finest of dry wines from classified VDP. Grosse Lage sites are denoted as VDP. Großes Gewächs, with corresponding labeling on the bottles. Diel GGs are shaped by their terroir and reflect our soils: the exposition, orientation, composition and microclimate. They demand a maximum of precision, concentration, humility and passion. In return, our VDP.Große Lage sites — Pittermännchen, Goldloch and Burgberg — grace us with the grandest of wine enjoyment. Treasures of fruit, minerality and spice.

Winemaker notes

Bouquet of vineyard peach and passion fruit, underpinned by a fine juiciness and spice. Here the minerality is evident in the form of smashed flints. Animating fruit in a playful aftertaste.

2021

Wine Advocate 96: The 2021 Goldloch GG is open and apparently more generous on the aromatic yet refined and flinty nose that reveals deep, pure, fresh and concentrated fruit intertwined with crushed and weathered wet stone aromas. Silky, crystalline and very elegant on the palate, this is a salty, savory and sustainable structured Riesling with crystalline acidity, structure and remarkable finesse. It is stimulatingly saline on the palate and very long yet needing time to show its talents. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork.

James Suckling 96: Pull the curtains, turn out the light and let yourself sink into this world of riesling mineral wonder! Still very tightly-wound, this is only just beginning to spread its wings. Great drive at the incredibly focused finish.

Decanter 94: Carolin Diel always goes for the quiet tones in her Rieslings, and that is why the fine nuances in the Burgberg are so touching. Spontaneous fermentation followed by ageing in large wooden barrels, this is a serious wine with a focus on spices, with dominant nutmeg and cardamom notes over ripe fruits of apple, peach and a hint of apple skin. Here, maturity and freshness come together. Expressive and with an impressive length.

Wine Enthusiast 93: This brings an elevated experience, with great elegance, but also intense acidity which matches the expressive notes of apple, lemon oil and slivered almond. There is an edgy buttermilk note that emerges midpalate, adding character, but it is swiftly scooped by enticing spice and mineral features that mark the mouthwatering finish.

2022

Wine Advocate 94: The 2022 Riesling Goldloch GG is from gravelly soils and opens with an intensely fruity and just slightly flinty but saline nose. Elegant and refined on the palate, this is a frisky, saline and stimulating Riesling. Not as sophisticated as Pittermännchen or even Schlossberg, this is a full-bodied but fresh and savory Riesling with lemon-bitters on the elegant and inviting finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Burg Layen in February 2025.

James Suckling 96: Lovely nose of orange blossom and flint. Ripe and delicate, stony and strong, this is a fascinating Nahe riesling GG with an extremely mineral and spicy finish that extends out towards the horizon. So precise and pristine. Great aging potential! Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

Vinous 93: The 2022 Riesling Dorsheimer Goldloch Grosses Gewächs is grown on Permian quartzite and pebble conglomerate. Subtle stone fruit is framed by lemon on the nose. A touch of pear peel adds a riper top note. The palate has an inherent, juicy coolness and a pithy yet soothing texture and concentration. The mouth-watering finish brings out more fruit: juicy green apple, tart Mirabelle and lemon. A gentle herbal savoriness lingers alongside citrus on the finish. (Bone-dry)
