The Pinot Noir Réserve has borne the name Caroline since the first vintage in 2001. Only the best batches of Pinot Noir are used for the estate's prestige cuvée. The estate’s prestige blend is sourced exclusively from the finest parcels of Pinot Noir grapes from its own vineyards. It goes without saying that no effort is spared during vinification to create a bottle worthy of the name. From selective hand harvest of the perfectly ripe grapes to delicate destemming by hand, gentle foot crush and maturation in small oak barrels — nothing is left to chance!
Winemaker notes
The scent has a hint of red berries, hazelnut and graphite. Elegant fruit, very finely structured body, perfectly balanced tannins, playful aftertaste.
2019
Wine Advocate 94: The 2019 Pinot Noir Caroline offers a deep, pure, refined, finely toasty but Burgundian and exotic bouquet of iodine, ripe and intensely flavored red and black berries and finely crushed slate. On the palate this, is a full-bodied, fleshy, intense and warm, silky textured and saline, very delicate but firmly structured Pinot wit crystalline acidity and fine tannins that are superbly interwoven. A fascinating wine. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.
James Suckling 95: This is very young, but is already so fragrant. Stunning balance of sour-cherry fruit and floral and mineral character on the medium-bodied palate, the fine, dry tannins and lively acidity supporting the very long, filigree finish. Drink or hold.
2020
Wine Advocate 93: The 2020 Pinot Noir Caroline is deep, pure, intense and peppery on the remarkably refined and clear nose that indicates ripe and elegant cherry fruit intertwined with tobacco as well as iodine and tea aromas. Silky, smooth, fresh and very elegant on the palate, this is an intense and salivating mineral, palate-cleansing Pinot that is very different from the rich and dense Réserve and more based on finesse and elegance. In 2020, the Caroline Pinot is, so to speak, the Apollonian version of the Dionysian Réserve. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Burg Layen in February 2025.
Falstaff 94: A scent of dark berries, elderberry, black cherry and blackcurrant. Wild berryish and a hint of clove. On the palate chalk, lots of substance and drive, young, fine tannin, concentrated fruit with an ideal acidity. A bit of Morey-St-Denis in the glass ? Lots of ageing potential.
