The soil is composed of reddish rendzinas that are thin, stony, and marl-rich in certain areas, scattered with rock tips that indicate a fractured bedrock, which encourages very deep rooting. This vineyard, planted in 1970 and again in 1989, produces elegant and refined wines, with the terroir imparting a distinctive mineral signature that enhances the wine's freshness with exquisite finesse.

Winemaker notes

2022: The aroma instantly captures the essence of Charmes-Chambertin. On the palate, this wine unfolds with remarkable intensity, presenting fresh raspberry notes enhanced by a delicate hint of pepper—simply beautiful.

2017

Burghound 93: A cool and beautifully pure if somewhat reticent nose grudgingly offers up a ripe and fresh array of dark berry, cherry, raspberry, spice, forest floor, herbal tea and a floral top note. There is excellent drive to the sizeable medium weight flavors that flash focused power on the wonderfully refreshing finish that is presently compact and very tightly wound. Patience advised.

2018

Burghound 91-93: There is plenty of sauvage character to the liqueur-like aromas features notes of red and dark currant along with pretty floral nuances. The attractively vibrant and delineated middle weight flavors possess a refined if less concentrated mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the mildly rustic and sneaky long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth.

2019

Burghound 92-95: Moderate reduction mostly overshadows the ripe and earthy dark berry fruit aromas. By contrast there is very good freshness, outstanding intensity and concentration to the big-bodied, powerful and serious flavors that deliver superb length on the emphatically structured finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This promising and built-to-age effort is a big but still relatively refined wine that is less youthfully austere than normal.

Wine Advocate 92-94: Another rather backward cuvée during my visit was the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, elegantly muscular wine evocative of cherries, wild berries and potpourri. As with the Griotte, I'm hesitant to even offer a score, and look forward to revisiting the wine in bottle.

2020

Burghound 92-94: A notably earthier nose of ripe and very fresh wild dark berries displays additional notes of underbrush, smoke and a hint of the sauvage. There is again excellent verve and delineation to the delicious if less sophisticated medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the complex and lingering finish where the markedly firm supporting tannins are not as fine, though I underscore that they are by no means rustic.

2021

Burghound 91-94: A slightly spicier nose is a bit more deeply pitched with its combination of plum, black cherry and whiffs of newly turned earth and exotic tea. On the palate the slightly more generously proportioned flavors possess good vibrancy and a sleek texture, all wrapped in a youthfully austere and lingering if slightly less persistent finish. Even so, this is very good, and the length may improve with time in bottle.

2022

Burghound 92-95: Once again there is enough reduction to overshadow all but subtle floral nuances. The caressing, delicious and vibrant middleweight plus flavors flash less evident minerality but equally good tension and even better richness, all wrapped in a succulent, balanced and complex finale. This isn't as stylish or classy as the Griotte but it's still quite good.
