Clos Prieur is one of Gevrey's finest lieu-dits, sitting below Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. The most recently released vintages of La Justice and Clos Prieur are so exceptionally made, that most wine critics consider them to be of a Premier Cru standard. 70+ year old vines. De-stemmed, indigenous yeast. Aged in barrel (50% New French Oak).

2021

Burghound 88: Here too the wood toast is sufficiently present to warrant pointing out on the cool, pretty and airy red berry fruit aromas where background hints of just turned earth and violet add breadth. I very much like the mid-palate texture of the medium-bodied flavors that contrast somewhat with the mildly edgy if still persistent and slightly firmer finish.

2022

Burghound 91♥: Here too there is plenty of sauvage character suffusing the ripe aromas of plum, dark currant and a hint of forest floor. The richer and more concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess a velvety mouthfeel and very good power on the dusty, serious and slightly more structured finale. This is excellent and recommended.

Vinous 90-92: The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru has a fresh, well-defined bouquet with plenty of energy and open, expressive raspberry and redcurrant aromas. The palate is balanced with a slightly savory opening and hints of black pepper. Whilst not powerful, the finish conveys elegance.

2023

Burghound 90♥: Here too a judicious application of wood is present on the wonderfully fresh liqueur-like aromas of ripe black berries, plum and pretty floral wisps. Once again there is both good volume and an appealing texture to the delicious, refined and stony flavors that conclude in a lingering and sappy, even suave finale. This has the stuffing to repay mid-term keeping but like the La Justice, could be enjoyed on the younger side.

Vinous 90-92: The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru is missing the delineation I found on the 2022, though it still offers attractive brambly red fruit mixed with forest floor and spice box scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins on the entry, more black fruit than the La Justice and a healthy dose of black pepper on the finish. This is promising, but the aromatics just need to pull their socks up.
