Ad Astra DOC Maremma Toscana grows in Nittardi's property in Maremma called Mongibello delle Mandorlaie between Scansano and Magliano in Toscana, only 8 km away from the sea at an altitude of 250m. The vineyards lie in the Morellino di Scansano DOCG area. The soil is mostly sand with granit and schist stones, with some volcanic soil below. All vineyards are certified organic.

Gleaned from the Latin phrase Per Aspera Ad Astra - “a rough road leads to the stars”. A phrase that is also true for great wines, as greatness requires a great deal of loving work and care in the vineyards. Ad Astra is an approachable yet simultaneously complex red wine that is also a pleasure when enjoyed young

Winemaker notes

Opulent ruby red colour. Fascinating spice and chili character with blackcurrant and fresh cherry fruit on the nose. Medium body, with good tannins and long, silky and powerful finish. Best served at approx. 18° C (64° F).

2022

James Suckling 93: Rich, red- and dark-fruited character with notes of spiced cedar, dried citrus peel and walnuts. Medium- to full-bodied, racy and tense, with firm, tight tannins that have a fine texture but need a little more time to integrate better. Shows good energy and is nicely filled with fruit. Spiced and cedary at the end, but with a lot of freshness. Better after 2026.

Vinous 92: The 2022 Ad Astra, Nittardi's Maremma wine, is terrific. It offers up copious blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and chocolate. Pretty floral notes reappear on the finish to add brightness. This sumptuous Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc blend will drink well on release.

2023

James Suckling 93: A spicy nose of tea leaves, moist earth, stones, dark cherries and currants. Juicy and savory, with tense cedar flavors, a medium body and firm yet polished tannins. Dusty and textured finish. From organically grown grapes. Sustainable. Drink or hold.

Vinous 93: The 2023 Ad Astra is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Succulent dark fruit, liquorice, cloves, chocolate and sweet French oak are all dialed up. This extroverted red is both showy and impeccably done.
