Casanuova di Nittardi Chianti Classico is a pure Sangiovese from the single vineyard “Vigna Doghessa” in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti. The vineyard lies on a south-east facing hill at 450 meters above sea level and has a soil full of schist stones, which engenders the wine with a fine minerality and pleasant freshness.

Since 1981, Nittardi has paid annual homage to Michelangelo by having an internationally recognized artists such as Hundertwasser, Horst Janssen, Giuliano Ghelli, Yoko Ono, Mimmo Paladino, Günter Grass, Dario Fo, Karl Otto Götz, Alain Clément and Hsiao Chin create the label and wrapping paper.

2019

Wine Advocate 93: This is a classic wine from a historic producer. The Nittardi 2019 Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi La Doghessa (featuring special artwork on the front label each new vintage) is an organic expression of Sangiovese that is fermented with spontaneous yeasts and aged in tonneaux for 15 months. The wine reveals generous fruit tones with plum, black cherry and sweet earth. There is a good amount of extraction or richness in this vintage, and this translates especially well in terms of mouthfeel. Production is 30,000 bottles, and La Doghessa always offers terrific value.

James Suckling 93: A slightly chewy and savory red with blackberry and blackcurrant aromas and flavors. Medium body with reserved fruit and tension on the palate. From organically grown grapes. This needs time. Try after 2023.

2020

James Suckling 92: A medium-bodied red with sliced black-cherry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Fresh and vivid. Bright at the end. Some bark undertones. 100% sangiovese. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
