This terroir of strong clay on limestone bedrock produces a powerful, fleshy wine with minerality, freshness and generosity. The Pavie Macquin grape types, predominately Merlot, have found their perfect home in strong clay soils. The molasses soils combined with asteriated limestone give the wines power and tension, as well as a deep meatiness. The ancient colluvial soils containing silt add a touch of lightness whilst retaining the mineral tension from the limestone. The Cabernet Franc is in its rightful place in limestone soils, with bare rock, which warm up quicker, allowing the grape variety to develop all its excellence and give the blend its 'backbone' and complexity. The wine is topped off with 2% old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wine Advocate 95: The 2022 Pavie Macquin has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of dark berries, licorice, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, dense and layered palate that's lively, concentrated and controlled, with excellent integration and length. Youthfully reticent, it will require a bit of patience.
James Suckling 97: The intensity of raspberries, stones, chalk and sea salt is impressive. White pepper. Medium-bodied with really crunchy fruit yet the firm and creamy tannins are really well curated with a polished texture and superb finish. Long and powerful. Such energy. Try after 2029 but hard not to drink before.
Vinous 97: The 2022 Pavie Macquin is stellar, as it was en primeur. Inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, new leather, spice and plum run through this powerful Saint-Émilion. Silky in the glass, it boasts plush, seamless tannins and fine balance. As always, Pavie Macquin is very sexy-one of the most sensual and hedonistic wines of the vintage.
James Suckling 97-98: Perfumed and clear, with aromas of raspberries, flowers and citrus. Medium-bodied, showing fine tannins and a tangy finish with salty undertones. A linear and complex wine with unique balance. 14.1% alcohol. 78% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. - James Suckling
Vinous 95-97: The 2025 Pavie Macquin is a powerful, structured wine. In most vintages, Pavie Macquin is sensual and silky, but the 2025 is quite tannic in this tasting. Dark-fleshed fruit, chocolate, menthol, licorice, sage and lavender add to an impression of brooding density and pure power. Floral top notes lift the close. I can't wait to see how this ages. Decanter 95: Quite dark liquorice, black chocolate and toasted notes on the nose, round and softly plump with fleshy tannins and a really bright, almost brisk core of crunchy. cranberry-edged acidity. Straightforward with a structured frame of firm tannins and toasted oak. It’s not yet harmonised and the acidity is quite accentuated which is almost always the case but I do like the generous and friendly tannins which make it that little bit more soft and charming. - Georgina Hindle
