A rich tradition of experimentation and a quest to source quality grapes from afar continues to inspire Penfolds winemaking curiosity. This is the fourth release of the French Winemaking Trial, sourced from exceptional vineyards across Bordeaux, employing time-proven Penfolds techniques in its creation. Anchored in a philosophy of selecting and blending to a House Style, FWT 585 is a Penfolds take on a classic Bordeaux blend.
Winemaker notes
A lavish display of sweet and sour Amarena cherries emerges, akin to a decadent black cherry tart with crème fraîche. This lush fruit core is balanced by a refreshing herbaceous nuance, with bay leaf and chocolate mint offering a counterpoint to the buoyant fruit. The toasty oak is masterfully integrated, folded into the core rather than imposed, contributing to the creamy texture that endures with each sip. The structure of the wine is framed by fine, pebbly tannins, which lend a tactile sensation akin to the smoothness of wet stone. It commands attention, balancing power and poise with a deft touch.

Decanter 92: This fourth French Winemaking Trial release continues its progression and is close to Bin status, says chief winemaker Peter Gago. Sourced from vineyards across Bordeaux (parent company Treasury Wine Estates now owns Châteaux Cambon La Pelouse, Lanessan, Belle‑Vue, Gironville and Bolaire) it still retains its Penfolds-inflected accent, thanks to a third of the wine maturing in new American barriques (the rest in new French). The ripeness of the vintage comes through in the Cabernet-led blend, which sees less Petit Verdot than usual, though still offers a spicy florality to the toasty cassis and cherry palate. Good support from grainy tannins, firm mocha oak and cool acidity.
Falstaff 92: Deep ruby colour, purple reflections, subtle ochre rim. Delicate cassis and herbal savouriness, blackberry confit, a hint of nougat, tobacco nuances, inviting bouquet. Medium complexity, red forest berries, some liquorice, vivid tannins, mineral, fine acidity, red currant and lime on the finish.
