Klosterberg is one of three remarkable hillside vineyards surrounding Kiedrich, situated alongside the renowned Gräfenberg and Turmberg sites. Its name, meaning “Monastery Hill,” traces back to an old route connecting the historic Eberbach monastery to Kiedrich, passing through these steep, mineral-rich vineyards. The terroir features a unique blend of Devonian slate, phyllite, and gneiss, topped with gravelly loess, lending the wines a distinct minerality and refined elegance. With slopes oriented to the southwest, the vineyard enjoys generous sunlight, yielding Rieslings known for their depth, finesse, and impressive aging potential.
Winemaker notes
Dry, complex Riesling, with an extreme elegance and minerality shaped by the stony, crumbling soils of the renowned Klosterberg vineyard.
2023
Wine Advocate 93: From vines averaging 35+ years of age in a cru that Weil has cultivated for 20 years, the 2023 Kiedrich Klosterberg Riesling Trocken is very clear, intense in a fine way and substantial on the still-muted nose that indicates ripe and fleshy fruit with a flinty nuance. Entirely vinified in large oak until the end of July, this is a very elegant and balanced Riesling on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and finely savory, this is a structured and saline-finishing Riesling with intensity and concentration, but it's still somewhat muted, as if it's under a dusty layer. This very young wine should benefit from bottle age or a carafe. 12.6% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.
James Suckling 95: Stacks of white tree fruit and white currant character, but leesy and garden herb complexity give this sleek and racy but well-structured dry riesling a strong personality. Barely medium-bodied and very cool on the palate. Then comes the long lemon zest, dill and wet stone finish that’s bursting with energy. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Vinous 94: The 2023 Riesling Kiedricher Klosterberg Erste Lage saw some skin contact before spontaneous fermentation in Doppelstück and Stück. Slight yeastiness blends with lemon and lime streaks that tease with aromatic notions of white peach. The light palate is absolutely fluid with juiciness and tart but ripe citrus. Yeast notes reappear on the finish, adding more substance to this full-fruited freshness. Aromatic, tangy and zesty—what a winner. (Bone-dry)
Falstaff 93: Spicy aroma, tangerine peel, mint, lemon balm, a hint of aniseed, with crushed rock behind it, clear and delicate. On the palate it shows with a gripping acidity, polished minerality, zesty citrus fruit, lime, mint, still young, very nice drinking flow, lots of certain ageing potential.
