From Pio Cesare Family-owned vineyards in Treiso (Il Bricco,San Stefanetto and Bongiovanni) and in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio (Rocche di Massalupo). This wine has been always and traditionally produced by our Family from grapes coming from different locations within Barbaresco appellation. This is the classic “formula” used by the ancient Barbaresco families to produce a wine which embraces and combines each of the unique characteristics of the different vineyards and terroirs of the Barbaresco area.

A very classical style Barbaresco: elegance and velvety, with ripe and spicy fruit. Strong tannins, but elegant. Good structure and concentration. Very long life. Barbaresco is a great wine it should not be described as a “basic” or “regular” Barbaresco, simply because it does not have any additional indication on the label.

Wine Advocate 93: The words "Barbaresco Pio" appear on the bottom of the label in tribute to the late Pio Boffa. The Pio Cesare 2019 Barbaresco shows a beautiful ruby-tinged appearance that is well suited to the bright aromas of cassis, pomegranate, licorice and grilled herb that lift from the bouquet. This Barbaresco is slender and silky in texture, and it's already drinking nicely right now.

James Suckling 95: This is a very typical Barbaresco, with a solid core of fruit. Lots of strawberries, cedar and chewy tannins. Full and structured. Excellent length, with the tannins kicking in at the end. This needs at least four or five years of bottle age. Try after 2027.

Wine Spectator 93: A graceful, well-toned red, with a solid construction supporting aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, rose and graphite. Reveals flashes of tar and white pepper as this winds down on the resonant finish. Best from 2025 through 2043.

Wine Advocate 94: The Pio Cesare 2021 Barbaresco presents a solid core of dark fruit, cherry and redcurrant, with spice and dried rose petal elegantly layered in at the back. This wine paints an accurate picture of a classic vintage with nicely ripened fruit and firm tannins. It sees 30 months in oak, mostly in large oak casks and some neutral barrique.

James Suckling 96: The aromas of iodine and oyster shell really come through together with black cherries and dark brambleberries. Medium body with firm and racy tannins that run the length of the wine. March 2025 release. Drinkable but even better in three or four years. Try after 2028.

Vinous 93: The 2021 Barbaresco Pio is gorgeous. A burst of sweet red berry fruit, rose petal, cinnamon, blood orange and pomegranate makes a strong opening statement. Medium in body and gracious, with striking purity, the straight Barbaresco is an absolute delight. Silky tannins wrap it all together in style. This is an especially fine vintage for the Pio bottling.
